Summer is here in Yorba Linda, CA and as we’ve already seen this year, heat waves are here to make our lives miserable again. This promises to be one of the hottest summers on record, and your air conditioner is going to be put through its paces trying to keep you cool. You can help it our with a few tips and tricks designed not only to maximize its efficiency, but to make your home a little more comfortable in the bargain. Some of these tips you can do yourself and some require the services of a professional, but all of them will help cut into those high monthly bills. The can include, but are not limited to the following:
- Maintenance Sessions. A tune-up from a trained technician will solve a number of little problems with your air conditioner: tightening loose bolts, lubricating moving parts, changing air filters and the like. Not only will it improve efficiency, but it will give the technician a chance to check for any problems that could cause a breakdown in the future,
- Sealing Windows and Doors. Air can escape through the cracks around your windows and doors, removing some of the cool air your system worked so hard to create. You can halt the process by using weather stripping to seal those cracks up.
- Programming Features. Comparatively few people make use of the programming features on their thermostat, but it can make a big difference in your bottom line. For instance, program yours to turn on 20 minutes before you expect to get home each day instead of running the system all day in an empty house.
- A Dehumidifier. High humidity can make the air seem hotter in your home, as well as forcing your air conditioner to work harder than it should. Installing a whole-house dehumidifier can correct the imbalance while cutting your air conditioner a little slack.
